In the 1st pic, John’s eyes are glassy with a faraway defeated look, his nose and ears are red; he is struggling to compose himself by straightening up his hair and coat (the only things he has any control over at this point) even if he obviously is about to cry from the sheer weight of betrayal of the person whom he:

  1. was intimate with in every sense of the word
  2. thought somehow “saved” him from 2 years of grief
  3. chose even when Sherlock returned 6 months before the wedding (enough time to get his head straight in making life partner choices)

In the 2nd pic, in the span of exactly 1.2 seconds (according to my GIF maker *lol*), he manages to convey

  1. punchy (right foot down)
  2. heartbroken (left foot down)
  3. cold/distant (right foot down)

in 3 easy steps (okay, not so easy, what with the heavy heart).

He has just barely recovered from the Great Big Lie of his best friend. Not quite recovered from watching Sherlock bleeding in his arms AGAIN (this time for real). Then there’s the “trust issues” established in S01E01.

In every single episode, John Watson is kidnapped or otherwise put through the wringer. Give him a break! Have some mercy on the guy!

But the good doctor always passes the tests of his heart with flying colors, doesn’t he?

While watching this scene, the simultaneous tears for the character and awe for the brilliance of the actor were rather overwhelming. I just wanted to hug both the character and the actor.

The talent of this man…I can’t even… Is it any wonder Martin Freeman has won an Emmy & BAFTA among others for his stellar performance in this show?

If this is not the worst manifestation of jealousy by John, I don’t know what is. Witnessing the sweet gesture between Sherlock and Janine, he pulls clueless Mary into a smooch for Sherlock to see. And mind you he gave a long kiss to Mary a second before this scene at the end of their waltz.

An underrated Jealous John (JJ) scene.

(goodnight lovely people)

john’s waving at sherlock, but sherlock’s looking at janine, so john’s like WELL FINE I’LL JUST KISS MARY THEN, like ?!?!?!?

Molly knows.

Oh fuck. Shit. That’s a bit like when he is looking for Sherlock and finds him with Janine in the pirouette scene. His jealousy against Janine definitely doesn’t begin in HLV.
In HLV, his reaction is the climax of this – that’s not only the surprise of seeing Sherlock having a girlfriend, it’s that it’s exactly what he feared would happen, he expected it, just hoped it wouldn’t happen, that Sherlock would not be interested more than this, but what he sees when Janine comes out of Sherlock’s room is the realisation of his fear, not only a pure surprise.

captain-liddy: The intensity of Johns emotions at Sherlock’s grave two years after Sherlock’s death is romantically significant. Lestrade’s prominence in TEH is specifically intended to provide an example of how a person grieves the loss of a platonic friend. John doesn’t grieve Sherlock like a friend would. He grieves like he lost his spouse.  My… Continue reading

kinklock: I think people get confused about John’s true tenderness because John experiences sexual frustration and jealousy in a very Loud and Aggressive way , but his romantic frustration is more like his face when he sees Sherlock propose to Janine… he  is  v ery  sof t…. and in love… the deepest of loves….. the… Continue reading
